2017 is slowly coming to an end and of course we would like to finish this year by sending you with this newsletter a review of the 2017 activities and some first information about our key projects for 2018.

Growing the influence of women in the boardroom: Cecile Coune
Cécile began by founding Women on Board (WoB) in her native Belgium in 2009. The organization promotes female participation on boards of directors at a time when only 8 percent of board members there were women. “Women should occupy a more representative place in economic decision making,” says Cécile. “After all, we represent over half the population and half of college-educated people; it would be a waste not to contribute equally.”
In 2013, Cécile helped expand the organization into a pan-European initiative co-funded by the European Commission. The umbrella non-profit, European Women on Boards (EWoB) includes nine associations across eight countries. Cécile is now stepping back into an advisory role for EWoB.
“EWoB is clearly a first-tier federation of national associations of women professionals able to serve in boardrooms and successfully addresses the opportunities that our companies, listed or not, are encountering,” says Monique Lempereur, who has taken over from Cécile as chair of EWoB. “Cécile was the cornerstone of this achievement and her contribution is truly invaluable. We wish to thank Cécile for all her energy and motivation over the past years and wish her all the success in her new challenges.”
Monique is member of the board of Women on Board Belgium and is serving in the chemical industry as managing director of Continental Carbon Europe, which she co-founded.
Patricia Laurette-Laks also joined as new Board member for EWoB. She represents Financi’Elles and is General Affairs Managing Director at Natixis, which belongs to BPCE, the second largest banking group in France.

VALORE D (ITALY) S.M.A.R.T. BOARDS FOR SMART COMPANIES
For a board to be effective it must be S.M.A.R.T., an acronym that summarizes five key factors for a performing board: Sustainability, Meritocracy, Agility, Responsibility and Technology.
Two unpublished studies from the AUB Observatory (AIdAF, Unicredit, Bocconi) on family businesses and the Politecnico di Milano were presented and confirm that diversity and gender inclusion add “S.M.A.R.T.ness” value to companies.

THE MANIFEST FOR FEMALE EMPLOYMENT
A Manifest for female employment was officially signed. This is a programmatic document defining nine points to enhance women’s talent in companies.
When signing the Manifest, companies declare to select candidates representing both genders and to monitor female presence at various business levels, favouring the professional growth of the employees. Special attention is paid to the management of maternity and parental support.
Over 120 companies have already signed the Manifest.
13/10/2017 EWoB & MISSION OF NORWAY TO THE EU, FUTUREBOARDS AND WOMEN ON BOARD BELGIUM (BUSSELS)
MINI-SEMINAR : WOMEN ON BOARDS IN EU
Under the presidency of Ms Ingrid Schulerud, Ambassador of Norway in Belgium, a mini-seminar was organized jointly between the Mission of Norway to the EU, FutureBoards, EWoB and WoB to share respective experience with gender quotas for boards. You will read in the article published by the Mission of Norway to the EU that quotas have changed attitudes in Norway where female board members represented 42 % in 2016. The participation of female in boards in Europe is also on the rise with 22 %.

FEMALE MENTORING PROGRAM
PwC Europe & EWoB organised a closing event of their female mentoring program with Prof. Dr. Naomi Ellemers (University of Utrecht) as guest speaker. The objective of the program was to:
- Boost the power of diversity to increase balanced leadership teams
- Support highly talented women reaching top decision-making positions
- Increase the visibility of board-ready talents
- For mentors to learn from the future generation of women leaders
This program delivered a rich sharing experience between EWoB and PwC. The feedback from both the mentees and the mentors was very positive. We look forward to the next season of mentoring for PwC women, which will be launched on 22nd January 2018.
9/11/2017 BOARD PROFESSIONALS FINLAND – BPF (HELSINKI)
ANNUAL BUSINESS SEMINAR: FOCUS ON THE FUTURE
There were nearly 200 guests attending the event. Lots of energized networking, sharing thoughts and experiences toke place!
Seven speakers from Finland and abroad focused on themes, trends and scenarios and shared new ways of working, digitalization as well as changes to come.
The focus being on the future the presentations dealt with themes like ‘Value by Corporate Governance in Disruptive Change’ by Board Professional Tom von Weymarn, ‘Future Scenarios in Different Industries’ by Tuomas Törmänen from PwC. Mikko Kosonen from Sitra focused on ‘Renewal and developing.
The evening then continued with active networking.
THE EWoB TALENT POOL
End of 2016 the EWoB Talent Pool was launched. It allows for anyone to apply as new candidate to the Talent Pool. The Talent Pool was created to provide easy access to any organisation looking for top qualified board candidates for international boards.
The selection process is strict and ensures a pool of highly qualified board of women for demanding boards. There are now a total of 155 validated candidates, located in 13 countries with 15 different nationalities, to choose from. This is the first time such thorough and high quality database has been created in the field of recruiting board candidates.
In 2018 we will focus on communicating about our Talent Pool to all the international agencies and companies looking for high talented women board members. Additionally, a communication will also happen to press, Chairmen/women of Boards, Executive Search firms, international corporations and other organisations.
Our expectations are high that even more companies will find their way to our Talent Pool for their future board recruitment.
